Kenyan Police Repel al-Shabaab Attack on Chinese Workers' Site
The militant operation commenced around 1 am local time (GMT2200 Monday) as heavily armed extremists descended upon the fortified compound adjacent to Elwak police station, inflicting damage on vehicles and infrastructure before retreating following a prolonged firefight, a news outlet reported.
Attackers breached the facility's primary entrance and outer security barriers, destroying a police cruiser and multiple construction vehicles before border patrol units arrived to bolster defenses and evacuate the workers to safety.
Intelligence suggests the militants infiltrated Elwak, located in Mandera county, from Buraache by exploiting unmonitored passages along the Kenya-Somali frontier.
Kenya has endured continuous al-Shabaab terrorist operations since committing military forces to Somalia in 2011 through the African Union Mission, currently operating as the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The extremist organization routinely executes cross-border ambushes, roadside bombings predominantly aimed at frontier police units, and assaults on isolated security outposts in efforts to compel Kenya's military withdrawal.
Garissa, Mandera and Wajir counties—all adjacent to Somalia—bear the heaviest impact, with al-Shabaab leveraging poorly secured boundaries, inadequate transportation networks, and isolated geography to launch strikes.
Despite enhanced patrols and expanded monitoring capabilities, Kenyan officials acknowledge al-Shabaab remains a constant danger, especially through improvised explosive devices planted along roadways, which have claimed the lives of numerous security personnel throughout the last ten years.
